BALANGA CITY, Bataan – The Provincial Government of Bataan through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) led this year’s rice subsidy distribution today, July 7, 2017, at the Bataan People’s Center, this city.
One program of the PSWDO under their auxiliary services (support services) is the rice subsidy program, wherein beneficiaries receive rice subsidies in the form of rice bags or cash gifts.
It started in 2004 when the Provincial Government of Bataan entered into a Memorandum of Agreement with the National Food Authority (NFA) to provide rice subsidies to surviving World War II veterans and/or their surviving spouse/children as well as to other beneficiaries such as the personnel of the Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police and their support unit, Day Care Workers, Accredited Barangay Health Workers, Barangay Nutrition scholars, Barangay Tanods, KABALIKAT leaders, and municipal presidents of KALIPI, PWDs and Tribal groups.
These groups were included among the beneficiaries of the program to lessen their burden of having limited resources as well as to recognize their continuous support to the government’s quest for progress, economic competitiveness and orderly community.
This year’s distribution of the rice subsidies were unlike before because now, instead of receiving sacks of rice, the beneficiaries receive it in a cash gift form. This change is due to the quality of rice the PSWDO has been receiving since February, that it didn’t pass the certain quality of rice that is needed. With this, PSWDO head Marilyn Tigas requested the Governor to just distribute cash gifts so that it can be given to the beneficiaries right away and not prolong their time of waiting.
The distribution of cash gifts started this June, every Friday, wherein the first ones to receive the gifts were Day Care Workers, Bataan Nutrition Scholars, Senior Citizens, presidents of KALIPI, PWDs, and Tribal health workers, Brgy. Tanods of Dinalupihan, members of KABALIKAT, and BHWs. Today, the first Friday of July, Brgy. Tanods and Captains of Samal and Pilar, and BHWs of Orani were scheduled to receive the gifts.
