Maintaining a steady supply of pork and chicken remains a challenge, according to Balanga City Treasurer Joselito Evangelista who expressed his personal view on the raising price of meat in the city market.

Evangelista said many poultry raisers in Balanga and neighboring town of Pilar has yet to operate after closing shops because of the threat of African Swine Fever (ASF) which devastated even backyard piggeries.

“Hindi pa nakakabalik yung dating mga magbababoy, kaya wala tayong sapat na supply ng karne. Pinamo-monitor ko yung ibang local suppliers natin,” said Evangelista.

At the Balanga City public market, pork is now priced at P380 per kilo, chicken at P190 to P210 per kilo. Some pork and chicken are being supplied by dealers from neighboring provinces, he said.

The local Department of Agriculture is reportedly meeting with DA regional officers next week to tackle the crisis.
