SAMAL, Bataan – In participation to the International Coastal Cleanup Day, the municipality of Samal on Saturday undertook a mass cleanup not only in the coastal areas but also along roads, inside villages, creeks and rivers.

In the farming village of Santa Lucia, participants started the cleanup along the Santa Lucia – Ibaba River and MacArthur Highway as early as 6:00 in the morning. Women were equipped with “tingting” brooms while men used bolos and loaded the garbage in sacks to the barangay service vehicle.

“We are on our third trip hauling garbage and there are still more to be taken,” said barangay kagawad Roberto Forbes while driving the service vehicle. He said the trash accumulated during the onslaught of typhoon Glenda. “Para ito sa ikalilinis ng barangay at mapangalagaan ang kalusugan ng mamamayan. Pinagbabahayan ito ng lamok,” Forbes said.

Midwife Lolita Poblete said participating in the cleanup are beneficiaries of 4Ps, barangay health workers, rural health workers, barangay tanod and villagers.

Barangay chairman Reynaldo Vinzon and barangay kagawads Juanita Evora, Renato Flores, Flocerfida Esconde, Anite Valerio, Ruperto Forbes and JD Tolentino led in the general clean-up.

Members of the barangay peacekeeping team or barangay tanod headed by Rod Carpio were also in full force.
