97 defective weighing machines destroyed

ORANI, Bataan – Ninety seven (97) defective weighing machines confiscated from the wet section of the Orani Public Market were destroyed last Tuesday, April 11 as a stern warning to market traders to stop shortchanging the public.

Vice Mayor Godofredo Galicia, Jr. and Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Bataan provincial director Nelin O. Cabahug led in the hammering to pieces the substandard weighing machines seized by local officials from the years 2012 to 2017.

Galicia encouraged market goers to undertake collective measures to utilize the reliable “timbangan ng bayan“prominently located in the market hallway to check under weighing by defective scales for their protection.

He explained the municipal government is evaluating the 15year old local market code for necessary amendments in particular the outmoded sections of the code with penalty clause for the interest of the public.

He added that the local government will try to provide more power to the consumer price council to effectively implement the market ordinance and for better public service.

Lawyer Raul de Guzman, Orani town administrator, who represented Mayor Efren Pascual ,Jr. in the ceremonial destruction of weighing devices, said the local executive is trying to inject  appropriate laws which would give more positive impact to the well-being of the general public .

Guzman has assured market goers of the government’s legal actions against fraudulent owners of inferior weighing scales.
