HERMOSA, Bataan – In their bid to support the Manila Bay clean up being spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), a top official of a private firm operating here vowed the other day to support it too by initiating massive cleanup of creeks and rivers in their area.
Aside from the Manila Bay clean up support, Engr. John Legaspi, Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Integrated Meat and Poultry Processing, Inc. (IMPPI), said that workers of their company have also been conducting tree planting activities in the province in support to the national government’s National Greening Program to address climate change.
The IMPPI, the first and the largest chicken dressing plant in Bataan employs around 800 personnel and workers, 95 percent of whom are residents of Bataan.
The DENR here led by its head Raul Mamac has been mobilizing students, barangay leaders and other concerned residents to help them preserve the clean waters of Manila Bay by conducting massive cleanup not only along the bay itself but also in what he calls “from ridge to reefs” rehabilitation.
“This is what we call from ridge to reefs since we are going to clean those areas including small and narrow rivers from hills and mountains that are possibly being the laying ground and source of bacteria that cause diseases due to its polluted and stagnant waters. If these areas are not cleaned up then it will contaminate Manila Bay and contribute further to the environmental degradation of beaches in the area,” pointed out Mamac.
