The Secret is Discipline

One great Indian named Visvesvaraya once said “If your business is only to sweep a crossing, remember it is your duty to make that crossing the best swept of the world.” The quotation implies that whatever our profession is, whatever our tasks and responsibilities are, we should exert our best efforts in performing them, with or without competition.

But we cannot do away with competitions in the classroom, in the school, in the community, in the entire country; everywhere, there is competition. However, the competition varies with the industry.

In the business industry, the competition is about which company markets the products best and who the best employee is. In academic institutions, the apparent competition is among the students vying for honors and awards. Even among teachers, competition also exists.

Since some people are eyeing for recognitions that are given when they are identified as the best, it makes them blind and fail to see the real competition that one has to face – the competition that is not against other individuals, but the competition against oneself. For sometimes, in striving to be the best, some people do things in ways that a good man will never do. If one will compete with his present self, one day he’ll be surprised how much did he improve and how far did he go in his career.

To do this, one needs to display and maintain discipline. Without discipline, one will never reach his goals in life. No matter how competent or capable he is, if he does not possess discipline, he’ll never succeed. With discipline and best efforts, one can be invincible in realizing his dreams. Discipline is the basic of all the values, and this is the secret of successful persons. Thus, everyone, especially students while at their young age, should learn and understand the value of discipline.
