DINALUPIHAN, Bataan – Flocks of migratory birds caught the attention of travellers and local residents in this only land-locked town in the province last Sunday.
They were seen feeding on grasslands adjacent to the busy Olongapo-Gapan Road in Dinalupihan, Bataan. This area used to be flooded every onslaught of the southwest monsoon but was with shallow water only.
The white birds known as egret seemed not to be distracted by the sounds of horns from passing vehicles and continued searching for small fish.
The birds from Asia and Europe start to arrive in Bataan last week of August or first week of September to escape the cold winter months and return to their countries of origin last week of March.
Migratory birds of different species are commonly seen feeding in fishponds in Balanga City and Abucay town from September to March.
The Department of Tourism has declared Balanga as a birdwatching site.
