BALANGA CITY, Bataan Balanga City Mayor Francis Garcia and Vice Mayor Vianca Venzon-Gozon led the opening ceremony of the week-long Learning Barangay Week Program in Cupang Proper, attended by other city officials, barangay officials and residents.

Garcia in his message said the staging of the program is two-way since the city government can immediately relay its programs to the barangays and at the same time the barangay officials and folks can directly raise their concerns to the city.

“The good thing about this program is that it is two-way, which is good for our effort for the development of Balanga”, the new mayor said.

“This week the city departments will go to your barangay to directly serve you”, he said to Barangay Cupang Proper folks.

He also announced that the next Barangay Learning Hub will be established in Cupang Proper. He added the city government is also working for the establishment of School Learning Hubs.

For her part, Venzon-Gozon urged Cupang Proper folks to support the city government’s efforts in proper waste disposal. “When I was city councilor, it was my committee. So I ask you to help in the cleanliness of the city and the preservation of our environment”, said the vice mayor.

The program in Cupang Proper is scheduled from August 8-13 this week.

Bataan 2nd district Congressman Joet Garcia then the city mayor started the Barangay Week Program in 2007 aimed at empowering the 25 barangays in this city wherein activities in a week were assigned by the city government.

The program was modified into the Barangay Week Program Version 2 wherein barangays assign the activities in the entire week-long program. The program was further modified into Learning Barangay Week Program integrating the learning aspect. The idea came up when the former city mayor attended the International Conference on Learning Cities in Beijing, China
