CITY of BALANGA, Bataan – Alessandro Rimondo Z. Pangilinan, a Colegio de San Juan de Letran – Bataan freshman, was hailed as Provincial Champion besting 16 other contestants from various schools in the province during the 23rd Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) – 4th Bataan Provincial Elimination, at the Conference Room 1 of the Bataan Peninsula State University Main Campus, Capitol Grounds, Balanga City, Bataan on November 5, 2014.
Pangilinan, a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering student, is the sole entry of the first time joiner, Colegio de San Juan de Letran to the PSQ. Dr. Jose M. Rapsing, Letran Bataan Registrar/ Basic Education Prinicpal served as his coach.
PSQ is an annual contest of the Philippine Statistics Authority, formerly National Statistics Office, designed to test the freshmen college students’ knowledge in statistics and to assess the students’ competency and skills in statistics as acquired from the secondary curriculum. The Provincial Elimination which is PSA Bataan’s 4th edition to the annual Quiz, is composed of three rounds to determine six qualifiers to the PSQ Regional Finals at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas-San Fernando Branch, City of San Fernando, Pampanga on November 13, 2014.
Completing the list of winners are second placer Jynne Keithleene Roque of Asia Pacific College of Advanced Studies, third placer Renz Collin H. Reyes of Polytechnic University of the Philipppines – Bataan, fourth placer Philip F. Salvadora II of Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific, fifth placer Amado M. Sapit III of ACLC College of Balanga and sixth placer Aaron D. Pineda of Bataan Peninsula State University(BPSU).
BPSU President Delfin O. Magpantay delivered the welcome address as host and defending champion of this year’s edition. BPSU student, Jessilie N. Santos who is the past year’s provincial champion continues to give inspiration in her speech.
PSA Provincial Statistics Officer Ledesma L. Morante, on the other hand, passed on the challenge to the contestants to produce another National Champion, a feat which the province accomplished in 2006. PSO Morante was joined by counterparts in Central Luzon – PSO Arlene M. Divino, PSA Tarlac; PSO Florencio A. Angulo, PSA Pampanga; PSO Elizabeth M. Rayo, PSA Nueva Ecija; and OIC PSO Maria Virginia A. Olveña, PSA Zambales, in search of the country’s young statistics whizzes.
The culmination of this contest for Filipino first time college freshmen currently enrolled in the second semester for SY 2014-2015 in any recognized higher education institution (HEI) in the Philippines, will be on December 9, 2014 at the PSQ National Finals where the National Champion will be proclaimed.
