BALANGA CITY, Bataan – In the recently-concluded 2016 National Schools Press Conference (NSPC), five scribes from Bataan competed in the said conference and two of them secured awards, held at Koronadal City, South Cotabato, Feb. 22-26.
“Very good ang Bataan, so, it is a reflection of the quality of instruction that we have when it comes to journalism, na really, masasabi nating may quality talaga. Nakakatuwa na mayroon tayong mga teachers and students who actively participated in the national and regional presscon,” said Dr. Jessie Ferrer, Schools Division Superintendent, in an exclusive interview with 1Bataan.
Andrea Nicole Tancio of Bataan Learning Center in Orani was adjudged as one of the Outstanding Campus Journalists for Secondary Level. Her mentor is Mr. Edgar Valencia. Michelle Clavel of Jose Rizal Institute (JRI) Orion, with her coach, Ms. Rowena Bantog, bagged the 3rd place for Feature Writing Filipino-Secondary Level.
“We are very happy and thankful that we won. It was an answered prayer. The journey was difficult but it was worth it. We are grateful, too, to JRI Orion, DepEd-Bataan and Region III for their support,” exclaimed Ms. Bantog.
Other participants, together with their mentors, are as follows: Richmonde Julian Conocido, with coach, Ms. Ma. Janette Manlapaz; Jedidiah Apolinario, with coach, Ms. Ana Liza Diomampo; and Maria Jan-niz Salang, with coach, Ms. Emilie Reyes.
When asked about their preparations for the national contest, Education Program Supervisor in English, Ms. Ilynne Samonte, told 1Bataan that they had a regional intensive training program held at Anne Raquel Resort, Olongapo City last Feb. 15-16.
The press conference was spearheaded by the Department of Education through the Bureau of Elementary Education and Bureau of Secondary Education, which aims to: demonstrate understanding of the importance of journalism by expressing it through different journalistic endeavors and approaches; sustain advocacy on social consciousness and environmental awareness; provide a venue for an enriching learning experience for students interested in journalism as a career or those who intend to use skill sets learned through campus journalism to give them a better edge in their chosen careers; promote responsible journalism and fair and ethical use of social media; and enhance journalistic competence through healthy and friendly competitions.
The confab activities include the following: Individual Contests; Radio Script Writing and Broadcasting Contests; Collaborative Desktop Publishing (CDP) Contests; CDP with Online Application; TV Script Writing and Broadcasting; Concurrent Sessions with Workshops; and the Awarding of the Winners and Outstanding School Paper Advisers and Campus Journalists, among others.
