ORANI, Bataan – Officials of the municipality of Orani led by Mayor Efren E. Pascual, Jr. are hopeful to win the top prize of P30 million in the national search for Malinis at Masaganang Karagatan (MMK) for outstanding coastal community.
Criteria for the MMK search are: No illegal fishing (30 points); observance of off-fishing season (15 points); declared and protected marine (15 points); clean coastal waters without any garbage or industrial effluence flowing to the sea (25 points); and effective mangrove protection and rehabilitation (15 points.)
Mayor Pascual had said the municipal water of Orani meets the said criteria and he is hopeful to win the top prize. With good working relation with different agencies such as Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Department of Interior and Local Government, DENR, and Coast Guards, Orani will win the national search, he said.
The MMK program, launched in 2016, aims to promote fisheries protection and conservation. It centers on the significance of sustanably managing fisheries and aquatic resources.
According to BFAR, there are more than 900 municipalities and cities with varied degrees of coastal resource management efforts. President Rodrigo Duterte through the BFAR and DA made MMK as banner program.
In Bataan, all of the 11 municipalities and one city are included in the search for MMK. program.
