BALANGA CITY, Bataan – The provincial government has earmarked P 5 million annually to provide rice subsidy to some 900 veterans and surviving widows of World War ll veterans in Bataan.
Luis Cruz, community affairs officer of the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) said the rice allocation program for the benefit of the war veterans is an appropriate recognition of their heroic struggle and sacrifices in the last World War.
He explained that under the rice assistance program distribution scheme for the 916 living veterans and widows, six cavans of rice is allotted for each veteran per year while widows receive three cavans per year, both in the first and second congressional districts of Bataan.
Cruz stressed the provincial government had allocated some P 60 million since the launching of the social amelioration program .
The rice assistance was conceived twelve years ago during the administration of then Governor Enrique T. Garcia,Jr. now incumbent second congressional district representative to alleviate the socio-economic lives of veterans and widows in Bataan.
In a related development, the Bataan General Hospital has provided free air conditioned rooms for the veterans and widows confined in the said hospital.
