Limay intensifies drive to curb illegal fishing

LIMAY, Bataan – Key officials of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) stationed in Barangay Lamao, and the local police chief met Thursday with local government officials of this town to strengthen the municipality’s fight against illegal fishing.

The formal meeting took place at the municipal hall following the arrest of 16 fishermen from Navotas City along the municipal waters in a two-day operation by the PCG and the Barangay Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council.

Limay police chief, Chief Inspector Don Dicksie De Dios, expressed full support to the LGU’s advocacy in eradicating illegal fishing to preserve the livelihood of hundreds of fisher folks here.

“We have apprehended these fishermen on-board 11 fishing boats some of them using baby trawl and mostly fine mesh nets which are prohibited by our existing fishing laws,” Lt. Commander Fideles D. Sallidao, PCG Bataan commander, told 1Bataan.com.

Mayor Roque also told the said officials he is willing to give incentives for those persons who can help them arrest illegal fishers that will enter their municipal waters in support to the municipal ordinance being implemented to curb these illegal activities.

Buoys will also be installed to guide the fishermen about the boundaries of the municipal waters to help the authorities in monitoring the activities in the sea. Lookout personnel will also be assigned in specific areas.
