Bataan can produce 7,000 MW of power

BALANGA CITY, Bataan – Governor Abet S. Garcia said that the province can produce at least 7,000 megawatts of power in the next three years.

Briefing local newsmen recently, Gov Garcia pointed out that there are now four coal-fired power plants in Bataan – one in Mariveles; two in Hermosa Ecozone and one in Morong, aside from the GNPower in Mariveles town that is now producing 600MW-which can produce 7,000 MW in next three years.

“So, there is no need to revive the BNPP because we can produce bigger electricity supply in the coming years,” pointed out Garcia.

Just recently, news reports said that the Aboitiz Power Corp subsidiary Therma Power Inc., has completed the $1.2 billion acquisition of stakes in two GNPower coal-fired power plants in Mariveles town.

Gov Garcia said that he had already talked with Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi about his stand in BNPP, as the leadership and the people of Bataan are opposing the revival of BNPP.
He added that aside from being obsolete, the BNPP is erected in the thickly populated region of Central Luzon that, if ever there will be nuclear accident, could affect millions of people residing here, adding BNPP can only produce 620MW.
