BALANGA CITY, Bataan – A prestigious international civic organization and Bataan General Hospital (BGH) have continuously provided free eye treatment services to local residents in the past three years.
This is congruent to the civic organization’s concept of solid commitment for the well-being of the people in conformity with the outstanding vision of Governor Albert Raymond S. Garcia to improve the health consciousness aspect and quality of life of the residents particularly with those reportedly inflicted with cataract, an eye problem.
About a hundred residents had availed of the cataract eye treatment facility provided by the Lions’ International to the Bataan General Hospital.
It was learned that privately-run hospitals in Metro Manila reportedly charge about P50,000 for cataract operations which the local residents could hardly afford, not to mention the other incidental expenses when staying in Manila for the surgery.
Statistical records showed that the two provinces in Central Luzon that have the highest incidents of eye problems are Bataan and Bulacan. Based on these surprising statistics, Drs. Tomas Meneses and his wife Cherry, both eye specialists and sight prevention heads of Lions’ International 301-B2, facilitated the donation from American Lions’ International Club of the cataract eye equipment to Bataan General Hospital in coordination with Governor Garcia and Dr. Glory V. Baltazar, BGH chief.
Cataract causes the lens to become cloudy which eventually affects the patient’s vision. However, cataract surgery can be done traditionally using ultra sound energy to remove the cloudy lens or it can be removed and replaced using laser assisted technology.
