Bataan builds ‘model’ district jail

BALANGA CITY, Bataan – Provincial Engineer Ric Yuzon said that 90 percent of the first phase construction of Bataan’s new district jail has already been completed.

“The first phase included design, earth work, perimeter fence, and box culverts. The first phase has a budget of P97 million”, he also said.

“Our construction works were actually slowed down by the bad weather”, he shared.

The jail is being constructed on a three-hectare area inside the 1Bataan Command Center compound in Barangay Dona, Orani.

“The bidding for the second phase of the district jail project worth P500 million has been done already. This involves construction of two 4-story buildings. Overall, 6 buildings will be constructed”, he added.

“The total budget for the construction of the new Bataan District Jail amounts to P900 million. The provincial government provided the P97 million fund for the first phase and P500million for the second phase. BJMP will give P100 million fund”, Yuzon said.

“The 2 buildings to be constructed will have factory floor. Persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) could use the floor and accept works from manufacturing companies outside”, he said.

“Each building could accommodate 2,500 PDLs. Once one building is finished this year 2018, all PDLs from the present jail at the capitol compound could already be transferred”, he added.

“The new district jail will have complete facilities like green area and gym”, he also said. A hospital reportedly will also be built.

“This is what Gov. Albert Garcia envisioned, a modern district jail”, Yuzon disclosed.

BJMP Chief Deogracias Tapayan noted that “the district jail we are building here in the province could become a model in the country”, he said.
