BALANGA CITY, Bataan – The SOGIE (Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and Expression) Equality Bill also known as the Anti-discrimination Bill (ADB), a proposed legislation of the Congress of the Philippines to prevent various acts of discrimination against people based on their sexual orientation championed by Congresswoman Geraldine Roman of the Ist district of Bataan which did not gain final approval in the last 17th Congress has been refiled by Senator Riza Hontiveros as one of her priority measures in this 18th Congress.
Congresswoman Geraldine Roman in a phone interview, when asked about
her reaction on the update of the SOGIE Bill, said that, she’s very happy to
know the progress of the Bill and added that she hopes her SOGIE Bill will be
finally approved in the 18th congress with the help of Senator Hontiveroz.
Roman likewise said that in May 2019, the SOGIE Equality Bill became the longest running bill in the Senate Interpellation period in the country’s history, that when session of the 17th congress ended last June, still the lawmakers failed to tackle said Bill.
Senator Hontiveroz on the other hand said that, the time has come for the
enactment of the SOGIE Bill and vowed that with the incoming congress, it will
be a “massive victory against hate and discrimination”.
Hontiveroz added that, “We will paint the senate with rainbow colors, our
hardwork in the previous Congress laid the groundwork for the measure
to gain new champions and allies and the massive popularization of the bill
inside and outside the halls of Legislature, has come to the momentum
that can’t be ignored nor halted.”
