THE municipal government of Abucay is digging further into the dumping of what it said toxic waste in Barangay Salian. Said toxic waste composed of sludge and fly ash from a certain industrial plant had been the subject of complaints from farmers in two villages of Salian and Gabon.
Jayson Marcelo, chair of municipal council’s committee on environment, said about 20 to 40 truckloads of waste were dumped in the mountainous village of Salian near the Abucay MRF.
Vice Mayor Robin Tagle said during last Monday’s regular session that the hauler contractor of waste materials had no mayor’s permit and started dumping the waste materials since July 2019.
“We only learned about this matter when residents started complaining about the sludge and fly ash that affect the plants and water sources in the area.
Tagle said the Sangguniang Bayan of Abucay had already summoned the concerned hauler said to be from Cavite but would only send its employees who refused to shed light on the issue except telling the body that “only their manager can speak about how the hauler firm was able to dump waste materials without the knowledge of the municipal council.”
“They did not pay any taxes to the municipal government, and for this the contractor may face serious charges for violation of tax and environmental laws,” said Tagle.
