The Department of Agriculture Bataan office was able to wangle P5 million worth financial assistance to piggery farm cooperatives to boost pork production in the province amid fresh wave of African swine fever.
Dr. Alberto Venturina, provincial veterinarian, said the national government has planned to conduct restocking of hogs in the country’s rural areas to help regain the meat industry.
“Magbibigay sila ng swine dispersal at assistance sa farmers na apektado ng ASF lalo na sa bandang Bagac at Morong na huling tinamaan ng ASF pero hindi nasama sa naunang indemnification program,” Venturina said.
So far, in Bataan only Limay town remained ASF-free, he said.
The country had lost 30 percent of its total hog population, with outbreaks traced to 37 provinces. The UPLB College of Veterinary medicine has announced it was preparing a comprehensive program protocol that would include developing “on-site” diagnostics, or test kits for sick pigs.
