Over a hundred youths from the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK), Iskolar ng Bataan, and other youth organizations actively joined WEmboree: Changing Mindset from Me to We, a youth camp on disaster awareness and response on February 17-18 at the 1Bataan Command Center, Orani.
“Ang tao, hindi naniniwala hangga’t hindi nararanasan,” Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Bataan Provincial Director Belina T. Herman said of people’s mindset on disasters and calamities, which was hoped to rectify through a series of talks and activities during the 2-day camp. Board Member Popoy del Rosario also graced the event and reminded them that disasters are unpredictable, thus the importance of such trainings to equip the youth with preparedness.
Topics discussed on the first day included the fundamental concepts of disaster, climate and disaster risk assessment, laws related to Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation (CCAM) and Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Operation L!STO, DepEd Order No. 37, Social Media Awareness and Etiquette and Cyber Security, and the Philippine Youth Development Plan (PYDP) 2017-2022 Framework.
They also had a tour of the Provincial Evacuation Center and the 1Bataan Command Center.
On the second day, the productive training camp continued with simulation drills and relays demonstrated by the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and Provincial Social Welfare Development Office (PSWDO) such as hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation, earthquake drill, and stress debriefing procedure.
The participants also signed a pledge of commitment to acknowledge their responsibility in DRRM to their LGUs and to promote the spirit of camaraderie, volunteerism, and involvement in their communities.
The said camp was held through the collective efforts of DILG Bataan, PDRRMO, Bataan Youth Development Office, and Sangguniang Kabataan Provincial Federation.
