BFAR experts visit Mariveles to boost fisherfolk livelihoods

Specialists from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Region 3 visited Mariveles last March 4 as part of their scoping and validation activities for the Livelihood and Enterprise Grants under the FishCoRe Project. The program aims to strengthen local fisheries, improve income opportunities for fisherfolk, and support sustainable coastal development.

The BFAR team led site inspections of proposed project areas and held face-to-face consultations with fisherfolk and officials from various Fisherfolks Associations. Discussions focused on project proposals, funding requirements, and strategies to enhance aquaculture and small-scale fisheries operations.

Local officials joined the activity, including Mayor Kuya AJ Concepcion, Municipal Agriculturist Janine Torres, representatives from the Bataan 3rd District Office, and the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist. Their presence underscored the municipal government’s commitment to supporting the fishery sector.

Among the visited groups were the Samahan ng Mangingisda ng Poblacion, Camaya, SAMANBI, Marcos Venture Masaganang Ani Aquaculture/Agriculture Cooperative, USWAG Sitio Bagong Sibol Mt. View, Townsite Association Fisherfolks for Rescue Operation, Lucanin Fisherfolks Association, Sitio Tacloban II Fisherfolks Association, and BASFRA.

Each group presented proposals aimed at expanding sustainable livelihoods for local fisherfolk. The Mariveles municipal government continues to coordinate with national agencies to strengthen the fishing sector, improve the livelihood of its fisherfolk, and ensure a more resilient and progressive community for its residents.
