GNPower Mariveles Energy Center Ltd. Co. (GMEC) inked a deal with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Bataan local government units for mangrove propagation and protection.

The project called Baka1Bataan is in partnership with the DENR, Provincial Government of Bataan, municipality of Orani, and Tubo-tubo Fisherfolks Association. The power company will provide P7 million for the flagship environmental project.

GMEC AVP for Community Relations Arcel Madrid pointed out that in the company’s CSR program P.R.O.G.R.E.S.S., P stands for Protection of Marine Life. He explained mangrove can sequester three to five times more carbon than forest trees adding international studies and research have shown the positive effects of mangrove to the environment, as it can mitigate climate change, and support marine biodiversity and economic sustainability. He said with a holistic approach, the project will revolve around adoption, protection, sustainable livelihood, and ecotourism which will leave a mark of a positive environmental, coastal, and community impact.

GMEC President and CEO Dennis Jordan said, “We are proud to be part of Bataan. We are committed to making sure that Bataan will progress, and we will serve the communities where we operate, and be responsible as citizens of Bataan.” He said GMEC commits to continually co-create positive change, shared value, and sustainable social and environmental development – to ultimately define energy for progress.
