Limay seaborne patrol nets 33 illegal fishermen

LIMAY, Bataan – Operatives of this municipality’s Bantay Dagat (seaborne patrol) on Monday morning conducted their operation against illegal fishing along the maritime waters of this industrial town. The operation resulted to the arrest of 33 illegal fishermen mostly from Navotas City and Cavite province reportedly using trawls and fine mesh net.

Limay PNP reported they confiscated 21 coolers of various fish from F/B Bakery, 3 coolers of fish from F/B Prince Alec, 3 coolers of squid from F/B Amaya and 3 pails of assorted fish from F/B Christian Ron.

The fishermen, who reportedly lacked pertinent permits and licenses, were apprehended for violations of Section 86 of Republic Act 8550 or the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998 – the law that prohibits the use of trawl 15 kilometers from coastline of the town.

Trawling is a method of fishing that involves pulling fishing nets through the water behind one or more boats. The net that is used for trawling is called a trawl. The boats that are used for trawling are called trawlers or draggers. The procedure according to experts cause serious damage to coral reefs.

The arrested fishermen will be charged with violation of Republic Act 8558. The local police here said the confiscated evidences will be brought to the Bataan Provincial Prosecutors Office before donating it to the Bataan District Jail inmates.
