BALANGA CITY, Bataan – Councilor Benjie Merino commended barangay officials and folks for the continued successful staging of Learning Barangay Week Program.

“We have a successful barangay week program because of the support of the barangay officials and folks”, the councilor said in vernacular when he delivered his opening message during the program held in Dona Francisca last Monday.

“Barangay officials and folks must continue taking advantage of the program”, he said.

“Let me echo the adopted mantra of Dona Francisca Capt. Cora Gonzales in public service ‘CG’ which stands for commitment and good governance”, Merino said in inspiring officials attending the event.

Earlier, Mayor Francis Garcia said the staging of the program is two-way since the city government can immediately relay its programs to the barangays and at the same time the barangay officials and folks can directly raise their concerns to the city.

Bataan 2nd district Congressman Joet Garcia then the city mayor started the Barangay Week Program in 2007 aimed at empowering the 25 barangays in this city

wherein activities in a week were assigned by the city government.

The program was modified into the Barangay Week Program Version 2 wherein barangays were assigned activities in the entire week-long program.

The program was further modified into Learning Barangay Week Program integrating the learning aspect. The idea came up when the former city mayor attended the International Conference on Learning Cities in Beijing, China.
