CITY of BALANGA, Bataan – Around 1,300 senior citizens from the 11 municipalities and one component city of the Province joined this morning’s foot parade from Doña Francisca Subdivision up to the Bataan People’s Center in observance of this year’s Elderly Filipino Week (EFW) celebration, with the theme: “Ang nakatatanda ay yaman, katuwang sa pag-unlad ng bayan, pangalagaan kanilang kapakanan”.

In his message during the short program, Gov. Albert S. Garcia underscored the vision of the provincial government under his administration that is for Bataan to become the preferred location for eco-industrial investments that will lead to the attainment of the highest human development index in the country. This can be attained by providing excellent public service towards a better quality of life for all. He added that this vision is measurable in terms of: high per capita income, access to quality education and life expectancy. He likewise emphasized that the welfare of the elderly is given high priority as can be gleaned in the programs and services of the government, as a gesture of appreciation for their contribution to the society during their younger years.

Ms. Nitz Infante, Focal Person for Senior Citizens and Ms. Jean Balico, Social Pension Program Head both from DSWD Regional Office 3 discussed updates on the implementation of national and regional elderly programs, respectively.

Board Member Rolando Z. Tigas, Chairman, Committee on Senior Citizens Affair tackled in his message the creation of a Provincial, City, and Municipal Coordinating and Monitoring Board that will attend to the concerns of the senior citizens regarding the implementation of Republic Act 9994, the Expanded Senior Citizens’ Act.

In between choral and dance presentations of senior citizens groups from the different municipalities, raffle draws were held to the delight of the elderly, to which Gov. Abet Garcia is one of the sponsors.

Spearheaded by the Department of Social Welfare and Development under the leadership of Ms. Marilyn Tigas, the successful EFW celebration was fully supported by other government agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs) and senior citizens’ associations.
