CITY of BALANGA, Bataan – The Provincial Government of Bataan through the Provincial Government Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO) in partnership with Oceana Philippines held an orientation and “writeshop” on the formulation of localized fisheries code in the Province of Bataan at The Plaza Hotel from June 26-27, this city.
Participants were fishermen from different municipalities, provincial and municipal planning development offices, Philippine Coastguard, and Anvaya Cove.
The aim of the “writeshop” is to discuss the issues arising in different municipalities concerning the fishing industry in the province. Former Board Member Gaudencio Ferrer proudly said that Governor Albert Garcia is in full support to programs that will uplift the lives of fishermen in the province. Oceana Philippines External and Government Relations Officer Mar Guidote said that their vision is to make our oceans as rich, healthy, and abundant as before.
Fishermen from different municipalities shared their struggles such as foreign ships who also benefit in their area. Some of the issues tackled were illegal fishing, marine debris, and lack of knowledge in their designated area.
Oceana Philippines signified its commitment to work hand in hand with the Province of Bataan in the implementation of its programs and services for the benefit of the fishermen.
Oceana is the largest international advocacy organization dedicated solely to oceans conservation. In the Philippines, it aims to restore fisheries abundance through sustainable fisheries management, strong implementation of coastal laws and sound science-based policies.
