ORANI, Bataan – More than 2,000 runners joined in the Orani Water District’s (OWD) successful run for a cause dubbed 17th Orani Water Dragon Run for the Watershed 6. The run was in celebration of the water district’s anniversary.
Christopher Gaco (male) and April Rose Diaz (female) were winners respectively in the 10-km run. They each received P5,000 prize. Marvin Venturina (male) and Arlyn Lopez (female) were the winners in the 5 km category each receiving P1,000 prize. In the 3-km distance, the top winners were Junior Manalili (male) and Angeli Lopez (female) also receiving P1,000 each. The top finishing 100 senior citizens were each given a cash prize of P300. All participating families were also given special prizes.
The run raised P41 thousand from sponsors. The fund raised will be used for the OWD’s reforestation project in the upland Tala watershed area.
The run was assisted by Orani police, Samal police, Orani health unit, Samal health unit, React Combat Group, Kabayan Action Group, Bataan Eagle Riders Club, and barangay tanods of Orani villages.
Andres said they have been doing the run for the last 17 years in celebration of their anniversary although the planting of trees in the watershed area was just six years ago. He said they already planted 50,000 tibig trees for the past five years, and will plant another 10,000 this coming August.
He said that their reforestation effort at the Tala watershed area aims to preserve the aquifers under it, the source of potable water they distribute to businesses and households in Orani and nearby areas.
The Orani Water Dragon Run has become an annual anticipated event during the month of February in the municipality attracting thousands of runners.
