Younger sibling wins silver medal in HK maths competition

Remember Rovie, the Bataena who won a gold medal in the “I love Math China Math Olympiad” last year? This time it’s her younger brother capturing a silver medal in Hong Kong.

Ronniel Vincent “Rovin” P. Roberto, a Grade 5 student of The Peninsula School in Limay and a resident of Balanga City, was part of the Philippine Team composed of elementary and high school students who competed in the International Mathematics Wizards Competition (IMWiC 2015) held last August 9 to 12 in Hong Kong.

Rovin is one of the 37 silver medalists from the Philippines. Although this is the first time Rovin joined the Philippine Team, winning a silver medal doesn’t come as a surprise since he’s part of the oral team who bested the grade 4 level in the MTAP-Deped-Metrobank Math Challenge Division Finals earlier this year.

The Philippine Team also won 12 gold medals and 89 bronze medals. The Philippines ranks second in the overall tally with China leading the medal tally.

Every year, the siblings Rovie, Rovic and Rovin attend the 12-Saturday training program of the Mathematics Trainers’ Guild (MTG) in Olongapo City under the guidance of the multi-awarded DepEd-Olongapo Math Supervisor, Dr. Roger Nuqui.

To qualify to the Philippine Team, they must become top scorers of the 12-Saturday training in Olongapo, one week in-house intensive training in Baguio, and a month-long mathematical olympiad summer training program in Manila.
