MARIVELES, Bataan – The municipal government here led by third –termer mayor Jesse Concepcion is preparing a 20-hectare land for their sanitary landfill.
This developed following a report that this municipality was among those charged by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) before the Environment Ombudsman for violation of Republic Act 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
The EMB earlier reported that aside from filing charges, the government implemented the forced closure of the town’s dumpsite. Aside from Mariveles, the charges were also filed against Abucay in Bataan; Hagonoy and Paombong in Bulacan; Jaen, Bongabon, Cuyapo, General Tinio and San Isidro in Nueva Ecija; and San Simon in Pampanga.
“At present we are dumping our garbage at an engineered sanitary landfill owned by Metro Clark Solid Waste Management Corporation located in Capas Tarlac, “municipal councilor, Atty. Ace Jello Concepcion told the local press in a recent press conference.
Concepcion added that initially, they are on negotiation period and public hearing for the purchase of a 5-hectare property in Barangay Alion and Batangas Dos.
The young legislator, who heads the municipal council committees on ways and means, ethics, rules, justice and privileges said they recently had a MOA with Metro Clark for the collection and disposal of their garbage.
Mariveles is the home of the first economic zone in the country, the Bataan Export Processing Zone now the Freeport Area of Bataan and the 600-megawatt GN Power Mariveles Coal Plant.
