An author in leadership once said that, in any kind of work in an organization, an individual needs 80% for interrelationship skills, while the remaining 20% is for knowledge or skill about one’s work.
It is true that what counts most in this life is human relationships. Others may not agree because they have other priorities in life other than this, for example fame, power, authority, wealth and material possessions and other trappings of modern life.
The most important resources are the people that make up the world and affect our daily existence. In fact, the progress and strength of a nation, rests primarily on its citizens. When people value people, the results are security, happiness, contentment and peace.
There is strife when human relationship is weak. There is unhappiness when this aspect is not given importance, and there is moral degeneration when people are relegated to material possessions and power.
According to Tapalla,W.C. (1998), a relationship is very powerful. It is even said to be more than the modern bombs that man has ever invented. A real good human relationship can spur a man to greater heights that he never thought he could attain.
It can make a hero out of anybody. It can result to devotion to someone or something, a devotion so strong that he could do just about anything. Why do we have those great men who made this country’s history so rich and colorful? What drove them to greater heights? Their memories linger in the minds of the individuals, they championed the cause of the people, they were not only after fame, glory and power, they sincerely believed that the Filipinos are worth dying for.
And because people are that important, you must always put that above other factors. In the school environment, a teacher must not only concentrate with his or her co-teachers. He or she must also mingle with other co-workers, the nurse, the dentist, the janitor or janitress, other utility personnel and staff.
Everyone in the school should interact with each other so as to maintain a harmonious relationship. With this, intrigues, conflicts, miscommunication can be minimized or even eliminated.
Let us all foster strong relationships with others; teachers, students, parents, and other school personnel. Let us connect with each other. Let us heal broken relationships. Let us always remember these words from the Dalai Lama, ”If you want to be happy, practice compassion and connection with others.”
