Bataan 1st District Rep. Tony Roman III reaffirmed Congress’ commitment to strengthening human rights protections as he attended a meeting of the Oversight Committee on the Anti-Torture Act together with officials of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR). Congressman Roman represented House Deputy Speaker Benny Abante in his capacity as vice chairperson of the House Committee on Human Rights.
During the discussion, lawmakers and CHR officials reviewed the current implementation of the Anti-Torture Act, identifying gaps among law-enforcement and government agencies and the hurdles that continue to limit full compliance. The committee also tackled the need for stronger coordination and more responsive mechanisms to ensure that the dignity and rights of every Filipino remain safeguarded.
Roman emphasized that sustained dialogue among agencies is vital in keeping the law effective and humane—especially as cases of abuse and rights violations evolve in complexity. He noted that Congress remains committed to providing oversight and pushing reforms that protect vulnerable sectors.
The Bataan lawmaker vowed to continue championing a compassionate, rights-centered approach in governance, underscoring that public service must always reflect empathy, accountability, and respect for human dignity.
