Abucay mussel farms temporarily closed
Hectares upon hectares of mussel farms or “tahungan” in Abucay will be temporarily shut down until March this year affecting hundreds of mussel farmers.
Abucay Mayor Erik Martel said the temporary closure of the livelihood source is in accordance with Municipal Ordinance No. 385 requiring mussel farmers to apply for Mayor’s Permit to ensure that “Abucay mussel farmers get priority in the business.” The Mayor wants to put the “tahong” business in proper perspective and put things in order for the benefit local mussel farmers.
Abucay town has been known for having abundant supply of fresh “tahong” and clams in the province. Reports filtering from the mussel farmers themselves say that their mussel farms are “invaded” by big time “tahong” traders from other towns and provinces.
In imposing said regulation, Martel said in statement that “We want to make sure that our “tahong” farmers get ample protection from the local government.”
