Bataan presents ICM accomplishments, best practices


During the national virtual forum on Integrated Coastal Management (ICM) Implementation in the Philippines held last December 4, the Provincial Government of Bataan through the Provincial Government – Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO), presented the achievements, lessons learned and best practices of the Province on ICM implementation.

In his 10-minute presentation, Engr. Victor Ubaldo, PG-ENRO head, discussed Bataan’s profile, ICM experiences from year 2000, achievements such as annual province-wide coastal clean-up, 1Bataan Pawikan hatcheries, regular mangrove enhancement planting activities, 11 out of 12 LGUs with approved solid waste management (SWM) plans, 1Bataan resiliency program and the Guinness World Record for the most number of trees planted in one hour.

Highlighted as the Province’s best practices are the development of a long-term goal of Bataan to be the first Carbon Neutral Province in the Philippines, enactment of Bataan Environmental Code, celebration of Bataan Arbor Day, 1 million trees for 1Bataan challenge, regular tree and mangrove planting activities, 1Bataan Ambient Air Monitoring Network and the 50-Megawatt Solar Farm project in Mariveles.

Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia (PEMSEA) Resource Facility and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) jointly organized the said forum to discuss the national strategy for the sustainable development of the country’s coastal and marine environment and resources.
