A total of 542 male persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) at the Bataan District Jail are reaping the benefits of livelihood and skills training programs spearheaded by the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP).
The program offers training in bayong bag making, canvas painting, heat press T-shirt printing, baking, and walis tambo making; equipping detainees with practical skills and giving them a chance to earn and support their families.
According to JSINSP Richard S. Balinagay, Assistant District Jail Warden, the program not only provides inmates income but also enhances their skills, which they can carry with them upon release.
“These livelihood activities allow them to send money to their loved ones and provides them with skills for reintegration once they regain their freedom,” Balinagay said.
Chief of Welfare and Development Section, JO3 Joel Adrian A. Yuzon, emphasized the quality of products made inside the facility. The items crafted by PDLs have already reached the mainstream market, including collaborations with popular brands such as “Bayongciaga” in Manila.
For some, the program has become a turning point. One PDL, who asked to be identified only as “Juan,” discovered his passion for heat press T-shirt design while in detention.
“Nakatutulong po ito sa amin na mapawi ang lungkot sa loob ng kulungan habang naghihintay ng update sa aming kaso”. He added that it gives them a chance to develop friendship, have purpose and hone their skills.
For the BJMP officials the livelihood program is more than just a training; it is a bridge to rehabilitation, enhancing self-worth, and second chance for those behind bars.
