Mariveles hosts Mayor AJ Concepcion Chess Cup

MARIVELES, Bataan – The local government of Mariveles hosted the Mayor AJ Concepcion Chess Cup aiming to promote chess and as one of the events highlighting the feast of Apo Kulas (St. Nicholas de Tolentino) in this town.

The One Mariveles Chess Association organized the chess tournament with participants mostly players from this town as well as from other parts of the province held at the Bonifacio covered court on Sunday.

The tournament had Open Section and Kiddie Section.

“The local government of Mariveles led by Mayor AJ Concepcion and Vice Mayor Lito Rubia fully support chess development”, Councilor Angel Sunga messaged chess officials and participants during the opening ceremony. “We will help in whatever way the municipal government can to promote chess as a way also of weaning away our youths from vices”, he added.          

For his part Councilor Tito Catipon said, “We want to tap and develop young talents, and who knows someday we can produce chess masters”.

“In fact, we worked for the forging of two chess clubs here Mariveles Chess Club and 3M Chess Clubs to become One Mariveles Chess Association for a more solid program for chess development”, he said.

“Chess players in Mariveles are lucky to have very supportive local officials”, commented BPSU chess player and participant Josel Moreno.

 The prizes provided by the local government will be awarded to winners of the tournament in a ceremony this week.
