MARIVELES, Bataan – The industrial towns of Mariveles and Limay made it to the “Top 10” among the country’s best municipalities in sourcing their local revenues.
Based on a report jointly released by the Department of Finance and the Bureau of Local Government Finance, Limay ranked 3rd while Mariveles ranked 5th out of the 1,490 municipalities all over the country in efficiently collecting Locally Sourced Income (LSI) in 2014.
Mariveles, however, has bigger Annual Regular Income (ARI) than Limay with a total collection of P451,949,661 while its LSI has a total of P291,561,587. Limay, on the other hand, was able to collect a total of P298,309,838 (ARI), while its LSI totaled to P207,051,649.
The top 10 in collecting local revenues are Malay in Aklan; Carmona in Cavite; Limay, Mabini in Batangas; Mariveles, Gen. Tria in Cavite; Sual in Pangasinan; Villanueva in Misamis Oriental; Cainta in Rizal and Togoloan in Misamis Oriental.
Under the law, municipalities have the direct authority to impose taxes, collect levy and fix user fees/charges and, like cities, they have broad taxing powers provided by law. However, based on the BOF report, 67 percent of the municipalities in the country are still poor in raising their own revenues in 2014 while 72 towns did not even submit their statements of receipts and expenditures.
