The governments of the Philippines and Japan are contemplating the establishment of a Manila-Subic-Osaka shipping route, foreseeing a surge in trade and cargo volume. This initiative stems from collaborative efforts between the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority (SBMA) and the Port of Osaka, aimed at enhancing port-related business opportunities and leveraging the economic potential of both regions.

SBMA Chairman and Administrator Eduardo Jose L. Aliño highlighted the Philippines’ robust economic growth, averaging six to seven percent annually, positioning the country as a vital player in international trade. Following a downturn in GDP growth due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there’s optimism for revitalized economic activity, with a focus on bolstering trade relations with Japan, a key trading partner.

The proposed Manila-Subic-Osaka route seeks to facilitate seamless cargo traffic between the two countries, tapping into the strategic locations of the Port of Subic Bay and the Port of Osaka. This endeavor is anticipated to bolster trade ties and accommodate the burgeoning demand for imports and exports between the Philippines and Japan.

Maruyama Junya, Director General of the Osaka Ports and Harbors Bureau, underscored the significance of collaboration between the two ports, emphasizing mutual exchanges in port development, management, and logistics. The visit to Subic Bay Freeport served as a platform to foster dialogue and explore avenues for cooperation in enhancing port infrastructure and efficiency.

Notably, the Philippine Investment Forum 2023 sparked considerable interest among Osaka port officials, particularly in the capabilities of the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority. Engagements between key stakeholders, including SBMA officials and representatives from the Port of Osaka, facilitated extensive discussions on potential partnerships and opportunities for mutual growth.

Ronnie Yambao, Senior Deputy Administrator of SBMA, highlighted the Port of Subic Bay’s growing cargo volume, reaching 6.4 million metric tons in 2023. With commodities like lumber, tires, and motor vehicles dominating trade activities, there’s a concerted effort to expand networks and establish new shipping routes to further stimulate economic activity and job creation.
