MARIVELES, Bataan – It was a Monday night of songs and dances to remember at this town’s plaza after 17 women romped to vie for the town’s coveted title “Ginang Buntis 2015”.

Catrina Mendoza Rufo, 20, representative of Barangay Cabcaben, got the crown. She is seven and one-half months pregnant to her first baby.

Mayor Jesse Concepcion said there were actually 18 lovely candidates representing each of the barangays but one gave birth on the day of the pageant. “Ginaganap natin ito taun-taon hindi upang maging katatawanan ang mga buntis kundi upang gabayan ang mga nagdadalang-tao sa tamang pagbubuntis,” Mayor Jesse Concepion said. It was the 10th year of the pageant.

This year’s pageant theme is “Dakilang Ina, Ngayon at Bukas.” Dr. Gerald Sebastian, municipal health physician, said the candidates as well as other pregnant women attended the Buntis Congress on the day before the pageant. “Various aspects of maternal and child care were discussed,” he said.

The candidates were elegant in their production number and their long gowns. Cheering dominated the night, especially in the talent and question and answer portions. Many performed interpretative dances as if they were not pregnant.

Questions focused on maternal and child care and even on myths about pregnancy. Dr. Cleothy Concepcion, the mayor’s wife, presented the panel of judges and criteria for judging.
