Bataan gets highest slot for SPES

   BATAAN Capitol- This province is the biggest beneficiary of the government’s Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) that will benefit a total of 6,134 out of the 18,352 poor but deserving college and vocational students in Central Luzon who will be given an opportunity to work in private companies and local government units (LGUs) this year under the SPES.

   This writer learned that the Bataan Provincial Government alone, through Governor Abet S. Garcia will recruit around 2,000 students for summer jobs this year while Balanga City under Mayor Joet S. Garcia is also hiring 2,500 students and Dinalupihan town under Mayor Gila S. Garcia will hire another 500 working students.

Bataan World War II Museum appeals for more artifacts

   BALANGA City – The Bataan World War II Museum adjacent to the Surrender Site Monument in Balanga City is in need of more donations of war artifacts.

   Mario Magat, executive director of the museum, on Thursday said they still have limited artifacts, mostly donated by volunteers. “Nananawagan kami na kung merong memorabilla tungkol sa World War II ang inyong lolo, lola at magulang, mangyaring ilagak dito.”

   Housed at the museum that opened only last February are story panels from peacetime to liberation, a few war artifacts and diorama in the form of dolls about the Death March that started in Mariveles and Bagac towns on April 10 and 11, 1942; respectively, after Bataan fell on April 9.

97-year old veteran recalls war experience

   BALANGA City, Bataan – Nicolas Cabalang turned 97 last December 6. Although a little short of hearing, he still has a sound body and mind. Once in a while, he chops firewood in his residence in barangay Cupang West, Balanga City.

   A native of Pamplona, Cagayan, the old man can still vividly recall his experiences during World War II when he was a Private First Class with the “F” Company of the 11th Engineering Corps, 11th Division of the Philippine Army.

   His teary pale eyes when recalling his near death encounters with Japanese troops radiates when he mentions his wife, the former Rosita Mendoza whom he met during his escape.

Land distribution program fast tracked

   DINALUPIHAN, Bataan-While the provincial government is fast-tracking its sponsored distribution of land titles for the members of the Minority, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in Central Luzon (DENR 3) is reportedly set to allocate  P118.8 million to also hasten the survey of metes and bounds of the provincial and municipal government as part of the DENR’s  acceleration for land distribution program in Central Luzon this year.

American general surrenders troops to Japanese colonel, marks fall of Bataan

   BALANGA City – American Gen. Edward King, Jr. with a heavy heart surrendered his troops in Bataan composed of Filipino and American soldiers to the Japanese Imperial Army on April 9, 1942 that marked the “Fall of Bataan”.

   War records showed that when Bataan fell, there were 74,800 Filipino and 10,500 American defenders belonging to the United States Armed Forces in the Far East (USAFFE) who became prisoners of war.

Bataan war museum needs artifacts

   BALANGA CITY, Bataan — The executive director of Bataan World War II Museum located near the Surrender Site Monument inside the compound of Balanga City Elementary School appealed for more donations of war artifacts.

   Mario Magat told newsmen here, Thursday afternoon, that at present, they still have a limited number of artifacts mostly donated by volunteers and some of their friends.

   “We appeal to all those people who have World War II memorabilia. You can donate it here in our museum,” Magat told local newsmen here.

Freedom run stretching to Mt. Samat held in Bataan

   BALANGA City – Bataan held a freedom run in Balanga City on Sunday stretching to as far as Mt. Samat in Pilar, as part of the commemoration of Araw ng Kagitingan, locally observed as Bataan Day.

   Ian Alacar, Race Director, said that about 300 joined in the fun run in the 50 Kilometers (KM), 10 KM, 5 KM, 1 KM and 500 meter categories.

   Some dogs accompanied by children-handlers joined in the 500-meter race.

Bataan forests candidate for ASEAN Heritage Parks list; may receive millions of pesos in grants

   The 20,607 hectares of forested areas in Bataan have been recommended by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to be included among the protected areas in the Heritage Parks list of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

   DENR’s newly-designated Regional Executive Director Franciso Milla, Jr., said in a statement that Bataan Natural Park has a total of 19,821 hectares and Roosevelt Protected Landscape has 786 hectares of forested areas that are being protected by the DENR and the Provincial government to prevent poaching and illegal logging.

Bataan holds parade of war & post-war floats

   BALANGA City – Bataan on Saturday held in Balanga City  a parade of floats depicting important events during World War II and the post-war days in commemoration of the 72nd Araw ng Kagitingan that culminates on April 9 at the War Memorial Shrine in Mt. Samat, Pilar, Bataan.

   Representatives of the military, police, civic organizations, girl and boy scouts and rescue and medical teams joined the afternoon parade that started at the four-lane road and ended at the capitol grounds.
