MARIVELES, Bataan – The local government of Mariveles hosted the 2nd Mayor AJ Concepcion Chess Cup aiming to promote chess and as one of the events highlighting the 72nd Liberation Day celebration in this town.
The 3M Chess Club organized the chess tournament here with participants mostly players from this town as well as from other parts of the province held last February 5.
“The local government of Mariveles led by Mayor AJ Concepcion and Vice Mayor Lito Rubia fully support chess development”, Councilor Angel Sunga messaged chess officials and participants during the opening ceremony. The councilor is the Sangguniang Bayan Chairman of the Committee on Sports.
“We will help in whatever way the municipal government can to promote chess as a way also of weaning away our youths from vices”, Sunga added.
Vice Mayor Rubia and Atty. Ed Taro also attended the opening ceremony, said 3M officer Vince Batul.
“Chess players in Mariveles are lucky to have very supportive local officials”, commented BPSU chess trainer Noel Ycasas who also participated in the tournament.
The winners of the tournament are Erickson Marimla, champion; Nelson Busa, 1stplace; Bai Singidas, 2nd place; Francis Pangilinan, 3rd place; and Joselle Moreno, 4th place. They all received cash prizes and trophies courtesy of the Mariveles local government.
