BALANGA CITY, Bataan – A paper on Science and Technology (ST) mango production in Bataan has emerged Best Paper in the recent 50th PAEDA Biennial Convention held at Bicol University, Legazpi City, Albay.
“Our Paper emerges as the overall champion under the 4 clusters”, said Dr. Hermogenes Paguia, BPSU Director of Extension Services and Project Leader.
The BSPU Paper won under the Building the Momentum and Gaining the Edge thru Technology Transfer and Utilization Category. The Science and Technolgy Community-Based Farming (STCBF) on Mango Production in Bataan is one of the collaborative technology commercialization activities of the Philippine Council for Agrcultre, Aquatic and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCAARRD) and BPSU.
“This commodity development initiative aimed to promote and adopt the viability and economics of the proven ST interventions on mango production and productivity”, pointed out Paguia.
The project provides the grass root level an opportunity to explore the potentials of their existing mango trees as a viable economic activity by following the ST interventions and proper management. Fifteen STCBF sites are established in Bataan, seven are in Balanga City while the other eight sites are in Abucay.
“The sanitary/corrective and center pruning, tagging of trees, paclobutrazol application, organic and inorganic fertilizer application were the ST-interventions demonstrated in the STCBF farms for two consecutive years. The advantages of the interventions were observed through yield increase from 3.5 tons to 7.0 tons after the adoption of ICM during the first and 2nd cycle, respectively”, said the BPSU director.
The BPSU Paper was also adjuged Best Paper under the Development Category during the 26th Central Luzon Agriculture and Resources Research and Development Consortium (CLARRDEC) Regional Symposium held at Central Luzon State University, Science City of Munoz, Nueva Ecija, on October 13-14, 2015.
