LIMAY, Bataan – The Department of Environment and Natural Resources inspected on Wednesday the open dumpsite in the sub-village of Mamala, Barangay St. Francis this town.
Benny Antiporda, DENR Undersecretary for Solid Waste Management and Local Government Unit Concerns and Supervising Undersecretary for strategic communication and initiative service, said his office will issue closure order on local dumpsite for rampant violation of RA 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act.
The Limay municipal government which operates the open dumpsite had been asked to comply with the law on solid waste management but failed prompting the DENR to order its closure.
Antiporda said the local government of Limay had a entered into a memorandum of agreement with the Metro Clark Waste Management Corp. on the garbage disposal but continued to defy environment laws.
He noticed that the dumpsite has no municipal recovery facility where the garbage are processed and segregated, no garbage effluent treatment and other important facilities.
“Ang bayan ng Limay mayaman to kayang-kaya nila gastusan ang waste management program,” said Antiporda.
He said safe closure of the open dumpsite should have been implemented by local environment office and the DENR regional office. “Napakaganda tingnan ng bundok sinira lang mga basurang ito. Ito ang Smokey Mountain ito ng Bataan,” said Antiporda.
Efforts to get the side of Limay Mayor Lilver Roque proved futile.
