Fish processing and marine products R&D center in BPSU

BALANGA CITY, Bataan – The Bataan Peninsula State University (BPSU) will establish a fish processing and marine products research and development center at the Orani Campus, in Barangay Bayan.

In a letter to University President Dr. Greg Rodis, Department of Agriculture (DA) Bureau of Agriculture Research (BAR) Director Dr. Nicomedes Eleazar said they have approved the fund of P2 million for the project to proceed.

 

Based on the documents furnished to this writer by BPSU OIC Vice President for Research, Extension, and Training Services Dr. Hermogenes Paguia, the duration of the project is one year and the university will provide another P600 thousand counterpart fund.

 

The establishment of the research and development center aims to provide the faculty and students hands-on fish handling and processing activities as well as a place where the faculty and students can conduct research activities.

 

The center will house the equipment, materials, and devices used in fish handling and processing. There will be also a fish processing laboratory. Fishes to be processed at the center will include galunggong, kapak, tunsoy, tamban, bangus, andtilapia.

 

The center will the best venue for value adding of fisheries and marine products that will employ strict quality control and extend the expertise and knowledge to the fishing communities and interested individuals, according to the  documents.

 

Bataan is home to various fresh and seawater food products. Fresh and aquamarine products are available whole year round.
