Mangrove planting activity

LIMAY, Bataan – In observance of the 2015 Earth Day Celebration and as part of its commitment to the Environmental Compliance Certification for Subic Magazine Complex, Orica Philippines, Inc. conducted a Mangrove Tree Planting Activity at the Binictican Mangrove Area last April 17, participated by Orica personnel, members of the Aeta community and representatives from the SBMA Ecology Center
.
During the activity, Mr. RJ Pescado-Mallari of the Ecology Center gave a brief orientation on the importance of mangrove in the ecosystem including the different types of mangroves thriving in the Subic area. Mangroves serve as habitat for diverse species of mammals, crustaceans like shells and crabs, birds and fish. It also preserves water quality and reduces pollution by filtering suspended materials in the environment and has a higher carbon sequestration compared to the trees.

After the activity, tools and other equipment such as shovels, wheel barrow, pails, sprinklers, bags and sacks of seedlings were donated to the Aeta Community and Ecology Center for the establishment of a Mangrove Nursery.
