PUP Bataan wins 2015 Provincial PSQ

MARIVELES, Bataan – Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) Bataan freshman student, Jerome G. Española is the provincial champion in the recently concluded 24th Philippine Statistics Quiz (PSQ) after garnering the highest score among the 20 contestants from various schools in the province during PSQ 5th Bataan Provincial Elimination held at the Colegio de San Juan De Letran, Abucay, last October 20. PUP Bataan Professor Danilo Delos Santos is Española’s coach.

Española, along with the other top six finishers, 2nd Placer Norberto O. Rodriguez Jr. of Bataan Peninsula State University, 3rd Placer Eduard Joseph M. Dela Cruz of Asia Pacific College of Advance Studies (APCAS), 4th Placer Zymon Jules D. Nevado of Limay Polytechnic College, 5th Placer Windelyn R. Culanag of Limay Polytechnic College and Earljo V. Velasco of Bataan Heroes Memorial College, will all advance to the PSQ Regional Finals on November 10, 2015.

As this year’s host, Letran Executive Vice President Fr. Raymund Fernando Jose, welcomed guests and participants of the event. Past winner Alessandro Pangilinan of Letran, inspired the contestants with his spontaneous yet sincere special message. Letran also lent the skills of Asst. Professor Jetron Velasco as Master of Ceremonies.

In her inspirational message, PSA Provincial Statistics Officer Ledesma L. Morante, expressed her wish to produce another National Champion, a feat which the province accomplished in 2006.

The provincial search for the country’s young statistics whizzes was undertaken with the support of the Provincial Population Office (POPCOM), the Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO) and the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) – Bataan. Mr. Danilo R. Perez of POPCOM, Ms. Maricar Hina of PPDO and Mr. Rico Val Bacuyag of DOLE served as members of the Board of Judges. Municipal Civil Registrar of Abucay, Edgardo Ventura acted as Quiz Master for the 3 rounds.

The Quiz was participated in by 7 colleges/universities in the province, ACLC College of Balanga, APCAS, BPSU, BHMC, Letran, LPC and PUP Bataan. It is notable that LPC which joined the quiz for the first time was able to place two of their students in the top six placers.

PSQ is an annual contest of the Philippine Statistics Authority, formerly National Statistics Office, designed to test the freshmen college students’ knowledge in statistics and to assess the students’ competency and skills in statistics as acquired from the secondary curriculum.

The culmination of this contest for Filipino first time college freshmen currently enrolled in the second semester for SY 2015-2016 in any recognized higher education institution (HEI) in the Philippines, will be on December 9, 2015 at the PSQ National Finals where the National Champion will be proclaimed.
