417-year old Bataan church being restored to withstand earthquakes

SAMAL, Bataan- Restoration is underway for the 417-year old church in Samal, Bataan to withstand high intensity earthquakes and not to suffer the fate of heritage churches in Bohol and Cebu.

Fr. Tony Bernardo, parish priest of the St. Catherine of Siena Church in Samal, is the second oldest church in Bataan, next to the St. Dominic Church in Abucay town which is 425 years old.

He said that an official of the National Historical Commission and a structural engineer have recently inspected the church inthe wake of the destruction of old churches in Bohol and Cebu. “Matitibay naman daw ang mga halige at structure sa labas kaya pwedeng plasteran ang mga bitak-bitak,” the priest said.

Bataan to develop Limay industrial estate

BATAAN, Philippines – A huge piece of land in Limay, Bataan that was exclusively for petrochemical companies will be opened for use by other industries to attract more investors and locators.

Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary Jose Raymund Acol and outgoing Bataan 2nd district Rep. Albert Garcia, the governor-elect of Bataan, started the drafting of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of Republic Act 10516 after public consultations expanding the utilization of the 530-hectare land area.

The law, approved by President Benigno Aquino III in May, opens the Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC)-controlled industrial land in Lamao, Limay to energy-related companies and other economic activities.

Shellfish ban due red tide raised in Bataan

BALANGA City – The provincial agriculture office on Tuesday afternoon announced the raising of a shellfish ban due to red tide in the whole province of Bataan.

Provincial agriculturist Imelda Inieto said that based on a Shellfish Advisory they received Tuesday from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, gathering, selling, transporting  and eating of shellfish in the province are prohibited.

She said that from 54 milligrams Saxo-Toxin per 100 mg STx shellfish meat last Thursday, the toxin level of samples taken in Orani, Bataan rose to 265 mg STx per 100 mg STx. Tolerable level for shellfish to be safe for eating is 60 mg STx.

BPSU choir goes Global

BPSU Main Campus, Bataan- After successfully winning in a number of choir competitions, the Bataan Peninsula State University Chamber Chorale (BPSU CC) quire is set to compete with other schools in Wir Feiern 5 Novelty song fest choir competition in Amoranto Theater in Quezon City come November 10.

The BPSU choir, composed of 35 well-trained young college students, had been recognized not only in the province but also in the region due to their unique and mesmerizing style in singing, making them quire like no other.

Now the envy of other schools, the group is now busy flexing their skills in preparation for their imminent show in South Korea and in Hong Kong come December.
