City Mayor Joet Garcia received the award in simple rites held at The Plaza Hotel where Bataan’s component city is hosting the Second Smoke-Free Cities Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) Regional Workshop participated in by some 100 delegates composed of public health officers, local government officials and other stakeholders from the seven countries. Last year, same award was given to the City of Davao.

SEATCA Director Ms. Bungon Ritthiphakdee said “I would like to convey our congratulations to Balanga City, for being consistent in its implementation and enforcement of 100% smoke-free policies.  You are able to sustain your efforts by mobilizing public participation and support, and your city deserves all the accolades and recognition.” She added, “Whether big or small, we hope other cities in the Southeast Asian region can follow your example, and learn from Balanga City’s experience”. In the ASEAN many governments are trying to follow the Philippine’s example and hopes to become a model smoke-free City. The 2nd Smoke-free Cities ASEAN 3-day Regional Workshop concludes today.

Mayor Garcia said “the City is honored to share our successes with other cities who share the same vision of a smoke-free ASEAN and we have proven that local governments can protect the citizens from tobacco smoke by providing comprehensive protection from tobacco‘s  harmful effects to all.
