MARIVELES, Bataan- Mayor Jesse Concepcion of Mariveles, Bataan could have celebrated his 59th birthday and the 31st anniversary of his marriage with Dr. Cleoty with a bang partying with friends and constituents but he chose not to.

Instead, the couple asked friends and residents to donate relief items and held on Wednesday a fun run to gather funds for Yolanda victims in the Visayas.

The response in both activities was overwhelming. Sacks of used clothes and shoes and boxes  of food items like noodles, canned goods, coffee, sugar, among many others piled up at the back of the Mariveles municipal hall.

In the fun run, more than 1,000 people of all ages participated in walking and running from the Freeport Area of Bataan to the People’s park in a span of ten kilometers.

The event was dubbed “Takbo Tulong Para sa Binagyo.” Each participant was charged  P50 but others gave  P500 and more  as entry fee.

“Kahit sa payak na pamamaraan ay makatulong man lamang kami sa mga nasalanta ng bagyo sa kabisayaan,” Mrs. Concepcion said, adding “paraan ito ng pagpapakita ng pagmamahal at pagtulong sa kapwa Filipino.”

“Kahit sino mapapaluha sa nangyari sa ating mga kababayang sinalanta ni Yolanda pero hindi sapat ang lumuha. Dapat kumilos upang makatulong sa pagbangon nila,”  the mayor said.

Dr. Cleoty said they were still studying to what foundation or organization they will turn over all the goods and cash they have collected.

“Para makatulong sa naTacloban,” (for natakluban or natabunan) 63-year old Armando Dial answered in jest when asked why he joined the fun run.

“Dapat magsama-sama para makatulong sa nasalanta ng bagyo,” said adults and children alike.
